The Author of Hebrews
I found it interesting that there has been a little buzz about who the author of Hebrews was. I am preaching through Hebrews on Sunday night so it gave me to chance to study the issue for myself. My father has always held that Paul was the author of Hebrews. But I cannot understand why.
Hebrews 2:3 suggests that the author was not an eyewitness, but received his knowledge secondhand. This would stand in direct contradiction to the apostle Paul’s repeated declaration that he saw the resurrected Lord (1 Corinthians 15) and did not receive any revelation from the apostles but from Jesus directly (Galatians 1 & 2). This is all of the evidence I need to believe that Paul is not author of Hebrews, regardless of the weight of tradition and external evidences.

I always cringe a little when Hebrews is brought up in a sermon and authorship is attributed to Paul. I understand many believe this, but don’t go around proclaiming it as fact. If that is your opinion, fine, but make sure the audience knows where you’re coming from. I’m going to remember this verse next time the topic comes up.
