TNIV and John 7:53-8:11

Brent Kercheville

I have begun to read the New Testament of the TNIV, to give the translation another try. I am unhappy with the treatment of questionable texts. Most translations simply mark a text and point out that some manuscripts do not contain the text. But the TNIV to John 7:53-8:11 and placed it in a smaller type and italicized. Is this really necessary? Do we need to encourage students NOT to read the questionable text by blocking the text off, using a very small font, and italicizing the font so that it is even smaller and more difficult to read? I think it is pretty clear that this is what students will do when looking at a text that has a small, italicized font. I don’t want to read it because it is too hard to read.

Give the necessary information about the text and mark it as questionable. But let the student decide. Don’t put the text in a print that requires a magnifying glass.

If you’re going to make it that hard to read why include it in the first place? I haven’t seen any other translations handle it this way either, the TNIV seems to stand by itself.
