Joe,

If the HCSB does that and some other revisions, maybe I would reconsider it being a great translation. TNIV will also have to the same thing.

Joe,

I know there is no perfect translation. 2 Timothy 2:15 says, "Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth" (ESV). I believe that rightly handling the word of truth is intrupting the Bible as best we can without sounding like a false teacher. This also goes along with translating the Bible. We need to stay close to original languages as best we can without compromising what the original authors were inspired to write. There is one thing I can say about the HCSB that I do like. Translating temple from 1 Cor. 3:16 and 6:19 as sanctuary. Our bodies as Sanctuaries of the Holy Spirit which I always believe we become once we acknowledge Christ as Lord. Because we are the sanctuary of the Holy Spirit, we must glorify in our bodies (1 Cor. 6:19, ESV).

HCSB is not on my list for translations because they have replaced the word "blessed" in Psalms with "happy." To me it makes the scripture irreverant and misleading. Take Psalm 1:1 for example to be blessed by God is knowing that we do not do the things unbelievers nor have close fellowship with them. Then in Psalm 1:2, it says the blessed man delights in God's word and meditates day and night on it. Blessed refers to the acknowledge that everything is right between me and God. Happyness comes and goes. The fruit of the Spirit is...Joy (Gal. 5:22) not happyness.

As far as the TNIV goes, I wished I never used that translation because of how some scriptures are translated. Galatians 3:13 recalls what Moses said about anyone who is hung on a "tree" is cursed. TNIV replaces "tree" with "pole" Cursed is anyone who is hung on a pole (Galatians 3:13, TNIV) There are many others like James 4:6 which says, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble" (NIV). Here is TNIV, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble and oppressed." I wish the TNIV was never published as well as the HCSB.

Another things about the HCSB, the translation was created so Southern Baptist could put it in their Sunday School and Discipleship materials without paying royalties to Zondervan for using the NIV.

Excellent list. I have not done anything using the ESV...yet. My list would have to be shorter: HCSB, NKJV and the NLT with the 2007 revisions.

I am interested to see what the HCSB revision brings to the table....hopefully it will be a rewording of “This is the Lord’s declaration.”
