What I Am Not Happy To Be Reading

Angels & Demons
With the movie release of Angels & Demons coming in May, I have begun to read the novel. I am not reading it because I like Dan Brown, his books, or anything of the like. But I fear that the mass hysteria that enveloped the country with the release of The Da Vinci Code will occur again with the release of Angels & Demons. So, I need to be ready to give an answer if the Bible and its authority is called into question again. I think any teacher of the Bible needs to be ready to answer any authority questions that may arise with another Dan Brown book being turned into a movie. So, with no joy, I began reading the book today.

To me it’s distressing to learn of yet another book and/or movie that distorts and twists the Scriptures. When you have novels such as the Left Behind series, The DaVinci Code, The Shack, and now this Angels & Demons, people, especially those who are unlearned in the Scriptures, read this stuff which then results in serious repercussions.
Why should they read the Bible? . . . you know, an old out-dated, irrelevant book when you read something that’s modern, fresh, easy to read . . . and enjoyable!
Most people, even so-called Christians don’t read their Bibles. In fact, most have preconceived ideas what the Bible teaches and think they no longer need to read it. In other words, in their minds, they’re fully informed as to who God is and what His will is.
So, when you have totally fictitious stories with outlandish characters (this is why these books appeal to the masses), people become enamored with them. The Shack is a classic example of what I’m talking about. Never have I seen so many “Christians” tell me that this was the best book they had ever read, that they now have a “new” perspective on God and Jesus that they’d never had before!
Then they come back and tell me that if they read the Bible, it’s usually “The Message” or some derivative of it. It’s scary. It’s really, really scary how man has become so enamored with himself that he thinks he knows better than God . . . and can tell His story better than He can!
